THE DISBURSEMENT OF TRANSPORT ALLOWANCE TO CORP MEMBERS AT THE PERMANENT ORIENTATION CAMP, ISEYIN, OYO STATE

The National Youth Service corps in Oyo State would have been portrayed in a bad light without the disbursement of the sum of one thousand five hundred naira (#1500) for fare to corps members. It was made a statutory payment by the national leadership of NYSC to enable prospective corps members get little money for transport. The payment has two stages. The first payment was the insurance of a thousand five hundred naira to the young graduates rendering selfless service to their fatherland.
It may interest you to know that the collection of this money by corps members started at 5.00pm last Saturday and ended at about 6.30pm. It was continued on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the present week. According to a reliable source who spoke to our correspondence during the week under review, we gathered that the disbursement was on course. Statistics and other facts on ground had shown that over 300 corpers in the camp have reserved their payment as there was discrepancy in the disbursement.

MY CAMP EXPERIENCE THUS FAR

I've made two major personal discoveries in the few days I've spent in camp thus far. It's been like nothing I expected.
The first is that I am NOT physically strong. I didn't know the extent of my physical weakness until I arrived to attend the NYSC Batch B 2015 Oyo state Camp. In my lame attempt to carry my box on my head at the camp gate, I fell down 3 times. In between the soldiers raising their deep voices at me to my fellow prospective corp members glaring at me with pity written all over their faces, I looked ahead only to discover a friend of mine had been videoing my struggle with the box the entire time. I cannot adequately explain how much shame I felt in that moment. What a way to begin my 3 week Journey!
Haven narrowly escaped the "box carrying" tradition with no injuries sustained; I breathed a sigh of relief thinking the worst was finally over. This was however short lived as the registration process proved to be a much more difficult task.

A Chat with Fawole John Oyeyemi

1. Can we meet you?

My name is Fawole John Oyeyemi, a Professional Chess Player & a graduate of computer science from University of Abuja. I learnt how to play chess and participated in my  first Chess tournament in 1999. In 2002, I won the Opens II category of the NBL Chess Championship in Lagos. The following year, I became the National Junior Chess Champion by winning the Agusto & Co under 20 Chess Championship.  Following my achievement in 2003, I started playing in the (Masters Category) highest level in Nigerian Chess.

2. It all started: It started right immediately after winning the Junior Championships, It was a long & tough journey and i think tenacity has brought me this far. I had to let go of chess for a while to concentrate on academics and earn my Bachelor's degree. At that point, i needed to set my priorities right and concentrate on academics after which i returned to chess and fortunately, i won the National Championship after Graduating from Uni.

Success is impossible without Habits

There are few things once acquired will guarantee success. In fact to be successful one must possess several qualities like patience, perseverance, consistency, hard work e.t.c. All these qualities applied together towards a specific goal always create success. Many have puzzled and searched for a shortcut to success but there really isn’t any. The closest thing to a cheat sheet for success is understanding and applying the power of habit formation.

According to Wikipedia, “Habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur unconsciously”. So in other words, habit is very similar to a computer program as it helps repeat a particular task regularly. And a computer program can be written to perform any task the programmer desires.

NYSC bars pregnant women, nursing mothers, PG students from service

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has barred pregnant women, nursing mothers and Post graduate students from partaking in the national service across the country.

NYSC DG, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, said the exemption of people in these categories from service was because they would not be able to undergo the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC, which is mobilisation, orientation, primary assignment and winding-up passing out parade.

Olawumi said it didn't make sense that pregnant women and nursing mothers would be absent from these stages of the national service, only to resurface for posting to their various places of primary assignments. The NYSC also said that pregnant women and children would no longer be allowed into orientation camps across the country.

LAMENTATION OF THE BLACK GIRL CHILD

"I am that African girl child,
Whom you've left in the forests' wild.
While you darling to mourn my death,
As my dreams fade, breath by breath?

Was I not born with heart and soul,
That I'm treated as half the whole?
Was I not to be bred with boundless beauty,
Rather than penury and pains as my duty?

LIVE WITH IT

Didnt you see all these traits before getting yourself into such commitment? Is the general question they are asked. Some will say, I didnt see any of it while others will say, I thought I could change him or her.
In marriage, there are various character, behavior, trait that your spouse would exhibit that you never thought they could, most times they are things you dislike but other times, and they are good ones. No matter how long a couple must have dated before marriage, its not enough to know everything about that person and when he or she displays such character, they say stuffs like I thought Ive knew you so well, because we dated for long, but now, its like am living with a stranger.
One constant thing in life is change.

THE POWER AND BEAUTY OF YOUTH

Enjoy the power and beauty of youth.  You might never understand the power and beauty of your youth until they are faded, but trust me, in 20 years, you will look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how many possibilities that laid before you and how fabulous you looked.
youthfulness should be about effectiveness or should I say efficiency. How efficient do you utilize the opportunities open to you?  worrying about the future is like trying to start a car that has no engine, it is tantamount to thinking about things that might never happen.
Enjoy the power of your youth, work hard, invest your time and effort in things that makes you happy. do things that give you self satisfaction, things that please you, things that you will be remembered for.

TIME MANAGEMENT: CORPS MEMBERS ON CALL

Time has always been a major factor in the activities of man, as a student and as a worker, time is never enough. Amazingly it is this same time that most people think it is in abundance for corps members making them to assert that “service period is when you have the freest time in your life”.

Time can be defined in a paradoxical way as the shortest, yet the longest, the swiftest, yet the slowest, the most divisible and the most extended, the least valued and the most regretted, without which nothing can be done, which devours everything, however small, and yet opens the life and spirit to every object, however great. Even with this, most people still find it difficult to utilize this very short and enriched period of their life effectively.

NEW YEAR, NEW RESOLUTIONS!

By John Sodipo

It can be discouraging when your list of New Year’s Resolutions is as long as your holiday shopping list. And not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even worse late January and having to make these same resolutions the following year can be disheartening. New Year’s resolutions are a bit like babies, they’re fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain.

However, it is important to remember that the New Year isn’t meant to serve as a catalyst for sweeping character changes. It is a time for people to reflect on their past year’s behavior and promise to make positive lifestyle changes.

Each January, quite a lot of people commonly resolve to either losing weight, managing debt/saving money, getting a better job, getting fit/eating right, getting a better education, drinking less alcohol/quit smoking, reducing stress overall and/or at work, take a trip and volunteering to help others but only a few people actually make good on these resolutions. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half are still on target six months later.
