Medical CDS and CPET Members in Ibarapa East Organize Free Medical Services

It is a norm in the history of the NYSC for various groups to carry out community development service. On 25 August 2016 it was the turn of Medical in conjunction with CPET Cds group to carry  out community development service at Ibarapa East local government area, which was aimed at sensitizing the community on the need to be health conscious and also giving out free medical services to everyone available. The national anthem was recited as a reminder of our civic responsibilities and allegiance to our great country Nigeria. The chairman Apostle Aderemi NURTW(National Union of Road Transport Worker) chairman Ibarapa East local government gave the opening speech as he welcomed everyone, thanking the NYSC members for the initiative, and urging them keep doing more for the community, after which the Local Government Inspector Mr Adebayo Wasiu commended the group for their effort and also informed the public that it was necessary for the Corp members to impact in lives of the community in which they are posted to,as it is one of the primary reason why the Nysc was initiated , he also said that it was not the first such was carried out and it would not be the last. Then to main event, the first speaker Dr Adegoke Ife talked immensely on malaria and its consequences and how to harness it, before the second speaker Miss Blessing who took the platform to enlighten the community on the need to avoid HIV and AIDS which doesn't show on an individual, invariably means no matter the individual there's possibility that if one doesn't take precautions he or she might contact the disease, then the Mr Seun further strengthen the talk HIV and Aids and
he urged everyone to carry out their test which would take place on the event ground(new garage Eruwa)carried out by the corps members themselves, then the in-house Dr Awojobi also took the medium to tell the community about breast cancer and how to detect the infection at the early stage before it moves to an irreparable state, he stress that early detection and counsel from a medical practitioner would help fight the cancer before spreading. The day was wrapped up  with the Doctors(Corp members) available at the event  carrying out various test which include; malaria and typhoid test, sugar level test, BP test, dental test, HIV test, etc. Free drugs were given out in respect to what was observed to help the community stay in good condition.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY OF IRAWO

With an ambience of our location being Irawo-ile that seemed like none of them were interested in matters concerning health which was the footing we took off with for the campaign. Irawo-ile located in Atisbo Local Government, Oyo State with a handful of residents in it.
Prior to the D- day of the outreach, as the only two (2) Batch B; C-pets posted to the community under the NYSC SCHEME, we conducted one on one talks with members of the community about health matters and it was deduced that majority of them do not have an idea of what sexually transmitted infections entails and most of them have never tested for HIV.
Materials for the outreach like HIV test kits were sourced from 3 primary health care centres outside the community because the primary health care centre in irawo- ile was not functioning properly. Contraceptives and refreshments were also sourced from the C-Pets’ benevolence.
The outreach started at the Oba’s Palace where he led the movement by making himself an exemplary leader by making himself available for testing giving his followers reasons why they also should engage themselves in the exercise that was about to take off. Awareness and mobilization were done with drummers who engaged the same with rhythm to cause them to come from their farms, various places of work and houses so they can participate also in the outreach.
With the help of my colleague, a translator, my fellow Corp members, the event kicked off with the talk which was tagged ‘Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)/HIV testing and counselling. The attendance was impressive and the individuals present were eager to learn and ask questions.

The outreach came to a halt with the commencement of the free HIV testing and counselling over 50 individuals both first timers came forward to get tested with the aim of knowing their status. All tests came out Negative.

Corp Members Re-double Efforts To Make Nigeria Drug Abuse Free

The fight against drug abuse is global. The United Nations on the 19th of April, 2016 adopted a framework putting people at the center of global policies on drug control, which the head of the UN Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) says can help promote the urgent, united and concerted action that could put an end to drug abuse.
As the lead entity in the UN system in addressing the challenges posed by illicit drugs, the executive director of UNODC reaffirms that UNODC remain fully committed in helping states:
– To ensure access to controlled drugs to relieve pain and suffering.
– To promote prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration approaches rooted in evidence, science, public health and human rights.
– To stop the criminal, prevent and counter illicit cultivation, production and trafficking.
– And to use all available tools as provided by the convention on drugs, corruption, transnational organized crime and terrorism to tackle related organized crime, money laundering and illicit financial flow.
In support of this, the NYSC NDLEA drug free club Oyo zone lead by NDLEA Head of operation Oyo zone, Mr Ola, The President, NYSC NDLEA Drug free club (Mr Akinsipe, Wande Frederick), The Vice President (Miss Ujuwa, Oliver Onyebuchi), The General Secretary (Mr. Morgan, Morgan Sylvester), the Atiba Local Government Coordinator of the club (Mr. Michael Suleiman), Oyo East Local Government Coordinator (Mr. BIlawa Azeez), Afijo Local Government Coordinator (Acha Andrew), Oyo West Local Government Coordinator (Idongesit Victor Friday) and hundreds of other Corps members took the message to Owode garage in Owode, Oyo, Oyo State.
According to them “Drug is good, but drug abuse is dangerous and can lead to many consequences including brain damage, liver damage, hypertension, damage to unborn babies, premature death among others.
They classified drug abuse stages to include;
– Experimentation: this results as a result of curiosity and peer pressure
– Occasional and social use: in this stage, users are passive, accepting drugs if and when offer rather than seeking out for it.
– Regular Use: At this stage, user seek after the drugs and maintain their own supplies..
– Dependence and addiction: At this stage the drug becomes a major part of the user life.
The sensitization tour which lasted close to 3 hours was well attended and applauded by the motor Park users. Most of the drivers who spoke with our correspondent showered praises on the Corp Members and promised not to drink and drive as they all have one life to live.

Expectations For Passing-out Corps Members

Jubilations and encomium usually floods the passing out Parade ceremony of NYSC. Many corps members are always happy that today, "we have successfully climbed another step in our career".

Now that you have finished serving, copious expectations await you yourself, from your family members also from the society at large. As you are celebrating today, know that you are metamorphosing into the world at large to give out your best to the society.

Yes, you have today put off the Khaki, PPA being a thing of the past, CDS will no longer miss your presence. However, you should not seize to obey the clarion call, the call to lift our blessed nation high, the call to work hard all times and the call to be dedicated to all our duties. This are some of the messages that shouldn’t pass away with the POP.  Today our expectations are much, so you need to get set for the tasks ahead, don’t relax at this juncture because this is just a milestone and not the end of the journey.

Expectations from Yourself

I am sure that you have set amazing expectations for yourself. As some are preparing themselves for good job, others are analyzing and ruminating on how to start their own business and life. Some are yet to conclude on what to do after service, yet we all have expectations of a good life after this time. Know that life is not a bed of roses, you might not get your desired wishes as you planned for it; don’t lose hope, rather, get yourself together and move ahead.

Distinguished passing out corp member, don’t contribute to the liability of the country, think of how you can start small and grow big. Ensure you use the various skills you have learnt in life, school and NYSC through SAED to contribute meaningfully to your community.

Expectations from Your Family

My very dear passing out corps member, your family are waiting for you to make them proud. You have now put on the cap of responsibility. They expect you to have a better carriage of yourself, a more robust thinking and a problem solving mind. To some of us, they expect you to get serious with marital life, you are not getting younger by the day, they will acclaim.

Your family are expecting you to come back from service to the father-land and serve yourself and them better. Don’t allow their hope to run out on them, make them happy by having good ideas and not derailing from being responsible.

Expectations from the Society

Our passing out corps members, today Nigeria is blessed with another set of youths that would contribute to the growth of the country and not to the unemployed masses. It is our hope that after your service year, your immediate community will get the best out of your ability, your skills will be valuable to our nation. Contribute effectively to the making of our dear nation and not to mar it.

Together we can make this nation great again. This is the time to think about what we can do for our dear nation and not what the nation can do for us. Together we can make Nigeria Great.

Once again, I congratulate you for this stupendous achievement. Have a great future ahead.

From your brother and Friend.

WE WANT YOU TO BE JOB CREATORS – OLAWUMI

The Director General of the National Youth Service Crops, Brig General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi has said that the design of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme (SAED) is to empower corps members to becoming job creators rather than job seekers.
The Director General stated this during his working visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin in continuation of his tour of NYSC camps nationwide.
General Olawumi stressed that the SAED programme becomes imperative as a result of challenges corps members are facing to harness employment opportunities after the service year.
The Director General said the global trends has shifted from searching for non-existent job to creating wealth with skills and brain.
