The Director General of the National Youth Service
Crops, Brig General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi has said that the design of the
Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme (SAED) is to
empower corps members to becoming job creators rather than job seekers.
The Director General stated this during his working
visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin in continuation of his tour
of NYSC camps nationwide.
General Olawumi stressed that the SAED programme
becomes imperative as a result of challenges corps members are facing to
harness employment opportunities after the service year.
The Director General said the global trends has
shifted from searching for non-existent job to creating wealth with skills and
brain.
“My dear compatriots in the national service and
nation building, I want to advise you to key into the opportunities provided by
the skills acquisition to better your lots and that of people around you during
and after the service year.”
The Director General continued, ‘NYSC as a vibrant and competitive leading youth organization in Africa has done much for the youths of this great country by coming out with an idea to take you out of the woods to the highest pinnacle.’
General Olawumi charged the corps members to learn
something new as a new generation of Nigerians who are on top flight to
greatness. ‘We are not trying to make a medical doctor an interior decor,
neither are we changing the destiny of engineers to becoming fashion designers,
but I want to tell you acquiring additional skills will make you the great
personality that will drive the change in the country.
“As corps members, you need to be patriotic.
Patriotism to our fatherland is required of you. Also, you must eschew all
negative tendencies and focus on how to make Nigeria great. The present
government of President Muhammadu Buhari believes very much in you to make the
difference.”
On the security challenges, the General who was the
best graduating officer in NDA, 36 Regular Course of 1989 said that the safety
and security of corps members are paramount to the government of the day.
“Gentlemen corps members, take your security
seriously and also be your brother’s keeper. In your respective places of
primary assignment, watch over yourself and your colleagues and keep an eye on
all details around you.”
General Olawumi who is the first officer from
Nigerian Army Engineering Corps to head the NYSC scheme appealed to corps
members to minimize the frequency at which they travel to reduce the rate of
road traffic accidents involving corps members.
Earlier, the State Coordinator, Mrs. Olufunmilayo
Akin-Moses thanked the Director General for counting Oyo State worthy of his
visit.
