TOP TEN NEWS THAT BROKE THE INTERNET IN 2014

It's that time of the year again when we all do some shoppings, distribute hampers, receive gifts and await Santa, but while we do that, let's take you back on a few gists, news or maybe memes that almost broke the internet in 2014.

10. Sexy Mugshot Guy

Jeremy Meeks broke hearts and the law in 2014. The 30-year-old convict had the Internet pining for bad boys when the Stockton Police Department posted his mugshot on Facebook in June. The photo definitely broke the internet when ladies wanted to bail him just cos he already stole their hearts too. The photo also inspired the #FelonCrushFriday and head shakes from mothers everywhere.

9. Suarez - The Biter

Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez took a bite out of the World Cup - and the Italian player, Giorgio Chiellini. With less than 12 minutes of time left on the clock in a tied game, Suarez tried to gain an advantage by locking down, teeth first on Chiellini's shoulder. This definitely had him being tested and results were negative for rabies, but positive for meme-ability.

SHORT STORY: I AM NOT MY SKIN

 By ANGELA NKAMERE

“I am Sandra and I am beautiful”, “I am Sandra and I am drop dead gorgeous”, “I am Sandra and I am a diva, my body is perfect, my mind is right and I am about to marry the most handsome man in the world”, I said to myself admiring my refection in the mirror, I had changed, blossomed into a more confident, beautiful woman. I turned to my side inspecting my full behind. Damn I looked good. Mr Jite you are in for it, you wanted a hot wife and now you’ve gotten yourself a bombshell! White suited me, in fact everything suited me, I ran my palm through the silhouetted –ball gown styled wedding dress I had on, the sequencing was beautiful, who ever thought Cinderella’s ball gown came in a size 16? My mind flooded with mixed emotions, I was so happy; overwhelmed was a more appropriate description for what I felt at that moment, joy mixed with fear, fear not because I was afraid he wouldn’t go through with it but fear because I had finally gotten what I always wanted, happiness but would I be able to handle it? I feared I would explode from too much joy or trip on my wedding gown while hurrying down the aisle. Wouldn’t that be something, I would fall flat on my face and everyone would laugh, I chuckled at the thought as I whirled myself around, it would be more of a comic relief than an embarrassment; I would stand up laugh and continue on my way. All that mattered was being he’s wife. MRS SANDRA OMO, wife of MR JITE OMO. I nearly shrieked, the thought of it alone sent me to the highest of clouds and back again. It wasn’t always like this, my joy that is...

LET’S TALK: EQUAL RIGHTS OR WOMEN'S RIGHT???

By ANTHONIA IDEGWU

It is baffling how when I sit to watch the news, I see educated Nigerian women, in power, fighting for equal rights for the Nigerian woman to the Nigerian man, all under the guise of being stripped of any right by our African culture (or in this case, Nigerian culture). Let me stress this again, they are EDUCATED women!

Random ‘Mary Scott’ Thoughts

By MARY SCOTT

Here’s something I saw on my way out today. It got me thinking and I thought to share with you guys...

So I sight this young girl wearing a blue top; something was written on it and, yeah, being a ‘reading’ freak and all, I couldn’t resist the temptation to read what was written on it. Now, we’re all familiar with the latest trend in fashion, as per tops. I’m talking about the various messages printed on tops these days; “Touch my soul, not my body”, “No romance without finance”, “Call my name”… the list is endless. Some are outrightly disgusting and suggestive that you wonder how a sane person could put it on.

4 Steps To Creating A Meaningful Relationship.

By Victor Akran

It is very easy to claim you are in love with someone. But the big question is are you really in love?  A lot of people claim they have fallen in love and at the slightest provocation, they break up. Truth is, if you were the other person, would you date you? Hmmmm?!!!
A lot of us are here hoping to find that one special person and I know this one year is too long a time to actually start something meaningful. So start now. Try these four steps:

LETS TALK: MOTIVATION

By Abimbola Ige

Motivation is a theoretical construct used to explain behaviour. It is the scientific word used to represent the reasons for our actions, our desires, our needs, etc.

A popular motivation theory is the conscious and unconscious motivations. A conscious motivation is one people recognise and are aware of themselves. Unconscious motivation refers to hidden or unknown desires that make people push themselves to achieve their goal. Some psychologists believe that a significant portion of human behaviour is energized and directed by unconscious motives. According to Maslow, “psychoanalysis has often demonstrated the relationship between a conscious desire and the ultimate unconscious aim that underlines need not be at all direct.” Another popular motivation theory is the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation theory, as explained below.

There was so much merriment and scintillation in the air as corps members basked in the euphoria of the 2014 batch ‘C’ stream 1 welcome party which took place on 7th November 2014 at the NYSC permanent camp site, Iseyin, Oyo state. The event flagged off officially, with the usual tradition of singing the NYSC anthem and was followed immediately by a welcome & opening speech by our mummy, the state coordinator, Mrs. Olufunimlayo Akin-Moses.

OYO STATE GETS NEW NYSC STATE COORDINATOR

Following the transfer of Pastor O. A. T. Alao to the federal capital territory (FCT) as it's new state coordinator an emergency meeting was called on the 28th of October at the NYSC state secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan for 2pm

All the Assistant Directors and members of staff were duly present. The meeting was opened by the HOD, PPRU Mr. Bankole. The outgoing State Coordinator Pastor O . A. T. Alao gave his address, welcoming the new State coordinator to NYSC Oyo State. He also appreciated all members of staff for their patience and diligence. He then introduced the new State Coordinator, Mrs. Akin-Moses Olufunmilayo, welcoming her to the pacesetter state open-handedly on behalf of the members of staff of NYSC Oyo.

He stated that she was blessed with the best NYSC staff who had given him 100% and urged that they give the new State Coordinator 150% if not 200%. He thereafter handed the mic over, after his brief address, to the new State Coordinator Oyo.

She said she was indeed happy to be here (Oyo State) on this day and she prayed for God's guidance. She then pleaded for co-operation from all members of staff stating that she needed them to succeed while wishing everyone success. She closed her address greeting them in the native tongue saying "E ku ile" while the members of staff replied her saying "E ka bo" which means welcome.

A vote of thanks was given, on behalf of all members of staff by the Assistant Director, Human Resource Management, Alhaji Usman Bashiru. He also pledged, on behalf of the members of staff, loyalty to the new State Coordinator, praying for God's guidance for both the outgoing and incoming State Coordinators.

Mr. Bankole led the members of staff to sing "A jolly good fellow" for the outgoing State Coordinator, Pastor  O. A. T. Alao who then gave the closing prayer after which the members of staff sang the NYSC anthem.

FGM: THE GIRL CHILD'S WORST NIGHTMARE

By TIMILEHIN OMOLEYE

Female genital mutilation also referred to as FGM is a very painful and destructive operation during which the female genitals are partly or entirely removed or injured with the goals of inhibiting a woman’s sexual feelings.

In Nigeria this practice is done in adherence to a cultural belief that the uncircumcised woman Is promiscuous, unclean, unmarriageable, physically undesirable and of potential risk to themselves and to their children as there is a traditional belief that if a male child’s head touches the clitoris he will die.

THE EBOLA SAGA

BY : OMOLEYE OLUWATIMILEHIN  OY/14A/1396

The Ebola epidemic in Nigeria has come to be the dread of everyone at the moment as a cure is yet to be found and so like HIV/AIDS the Ebola virus disease has become another name to dread.
Ebola virus was first isolated in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has since spread to other countries especially those in the tropical region of Sub-Saharan Africa affecting Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.

DISCIPLINE YOUR MIND TO THINK RIGHT

ADEOYE FOLASHADE A.OY/ 13C /1177

As youths, there is no doubt that we all want to make something good out of our lives and be a major contributor towards the building of our nation Nigeria.  We want to see certain things change, because it is no longer news that there is a lot of Negativity around us.  The question here is; are we going to let our environment hand us scripts of how we should live our lives? OR are we going to wake up from our slumber and begin to rescript our lives so that on the long run we will be the change that we have been hoping to see.

GIST: INEC TRAINING.

A good day is the day INEC decided that they will be needing the services of Oyo Corpers for the Osun state Gubernatorial Elections, 2014. Because the excitement this information has brought cannot be quantified.
And on the first day of training, 31st July, 2014, over 700 corps members assembled at Ikolaba Grammar School. Most of them arrived as early as 7:15 am, considering the fact that the State coordinator, Pastor O.A.T. Alao already said that punctuality will be one of the integral screening parameter. I know for a fact (I'm not kidding right now) that some corps members already ironed their khaki and even made breakfast the night before, and woke up as early as 5 am, so that at about 6:30 am, they were fully dressed already.

CAMP SURVIVAL SERIES

By

Ezinne Aja & Kemi Smith

First thing you need to know is camp isn’t what you expected. You might have asked questions from old corps members and they might have given you some good information but nothing they could have said would really hit the proverbial nail on the head. So if possible, begin with a blank slate with no expectations because you definitely find out it is not what you thought it was. So here are some tips that will help you survive the three weeks of NYSC camp:

Walk with the Wise

by Dada Michael OY/13C/2042

Counsel has everything to do for the fulfillment of your dream. A wise counsel can make all the difference in your life. It can be the difference between success and failure. God did not create you to function like an island. Rather, He has placed people with godly counsel around you so that you can achieve your dream.

Your dream without adequate counsel will be limited. Simba (in the Lion King) without the counsel of the wide pig and the other little guy would have died before his time. He was literally wearing himself out from the incident of his father’s death, but he got counseled and encouraged and became the leader of a clan. Even after then he still had his counsel. Stop struggling! You don't have to fall apart when you can receive help from godly counsel.

THE SEARCH FOR THE NIGHT OF MAJESTY (LAILAITUL QUADRI)

By ABIKE IDOWU

The night of lailaitul quadri is a special night and is regarded as the night of majesty during the Holy month of Ramadan. It is the night that Allah will descend to the lowest heaven to accept all prayers been offered during the course of the night. The unique thing about the night is that it doesn't have a specific date but the prophet encourages all muslims to be steadfast with prayers during the last 10 nights of fasting because one of those nights will definitely be the night of majesty. Whoever observes it with sincerity and good intention will get these benefits: Forgiveness of mistakes, Rewards and Blessings. Let me take you back to the history of this night, by telling you a bit about the Holy month of Ramadan.

HOW TO GET A MAKEUP FRIENDLY SKIN

By Thonia Idegwu

The skin, as we all know, is the largest organ of the body. The beauty of the skin comes out only when it has been taken proper care of.
All professional make-up artist know that it is not all about the products or brushes but the canvas- in this case, the face because if your canvas is rough, exceedingly oily/dry, or something worse, no amount of makeup done will make that face glow or look flawless, which should be the aim of seeking a professional for your makeup.  So it is advised to work on the skin of your face so it becomes makeup agreeable else you would wind up looking like a colored rag. Lol!

SUMMARY OF BRASIL 2014 WORLD CUP

The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the 20th FIFA World Cup, the tournament for the association football world championship, which took place at several venues across Brazil.
It began on 12 June, with a group stage, and concluded on 13 July with the final. It was the second time that Brazil has hosted the competition, the first being in 1950. Brazil was elected unchallenged as host nation in 2007 after the international football federation, FIFA, decreed that the tournament would be staged in South America for the first time since 1978 in Argentina, and the fifth time overall.
The national teams of 31 countries advanced through qualification competitions that began in June 2011 to participate with the host nation Brazil in the final tournament. A total of 64 matches were being played in 12 cities across Brazil in either new or redeveloped stadiums. For the first time at a World Cup finals, match officials used goal-line technology, as well as vanishing foam for free kicks.
All world champion teams since the first World Cup in 1930Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Uruguay – qualified for this competition. The title holders, Spain, were eliminated at the group stage, along with previous winners England and Italy. Uruguay were eliminated in the Round of 16 and France were eliminated at the quarter-finals. In the final between two former champions Argentina and Germany, Germany won the title by defeating Argentina 1–0 after extra time, thus becoming the first European team to win a World Cup in the Americas. This result marked the first time that sides from the same continent had won three successive World Cups (following Italy in 2006 and Spain in 2010).
Despite the hosts Brazil finishing in the last four, their tournament was overshadowed by their record-shattering 7–1 semi-finals loss, to eventual champions, Germany.

SUICIDE

By Ola Alaka-Coker

I tightened the noose I had hung on the ceiling fan. I was going to do it; I was going to take my own life. The pain was just too much for me to bear any more. I had gotten the rope from the yard downstairs where we spread our laundry and waited for my roommate to leave for service. I locked the door and closed all the blinds; no one was going to stop me my mind was made up.

I took a chair and climbed on it, using it to hoist myself up to the rope. I would kick it when I was ready to let go of the pain. I put my neck through the rope and tightened the knot.

Life-Matics

by Smith Oluwakemi OY/13C/1508
What is it? No idea.......just experiences from the older generation, kind of like a guide. Life is too short to begin making every mistake, we might as well learn from others.

LIVING not Existing

We are all in a stage of our lives where critical decisions and plans have to be made. The phase of (.....just chilling) is over!. I don't see myself taking anyone seriously that still says this. Waiting for a particular time or age to begin living life is such a waste of potential because when you do get there you're going to wonder when and how all the time passed by so quickly without you achieving anything meaningful with your life.

Bad Habits - Stop It (Part 1)

by Ezinne Aja OY/13C/1453

This is not going to be a piece describing different bad habits and saying “bad habits are bad for you” or that “you should stop them”, I’m not your mother. Bad habits from the word ‘BAD’ tell us that they ‘not good’, so repeating that they should be stopped is rather redundant, and again, I’m not your mother. So instead of starting with the “bad habits are bad” argument, we’re going to skip that and talk about how bad habits affect other people – people in your immediate environment especially. The greatest misdeed you can do is to put someone else’s life in danger because you don’t want to stop a bad habit. So we’re going to look at different bad habits in order of how life threatening they are to the person next to you i.e. from ‘least likely to kill the person next to you’ to ‘manslaughter’.
